Reflection:
The artifacts for this standard include the Copyright Project completed for ITE7445 and the “Internet Safety” blog written while in ITEC 7430. Both of these artifacts exemplify the Safe, Healthy, Legal, & Ethical Use of Standard 4.2. I completed the Copyright Assignment during my first semester in the ITEC program, in the fall 2012. The Copyright Project was a big project for me. It was going to require a lot of information from me and some of this was new to me. I knew about plagiarism and taking other people’s pictures and using them without permission but that was really all I knew about the copyright laws.
The artifacts demonstrate my ability to model and facilitate the safe and healthy uses of digital information and technologies. The artifacts show the research I completed on the copyright law, Fair Use guidelines on what is legally safe to use, Creative Commons, and giving proper credit for using the work of others. It is our job to keep our students safe when they are on the internet at school. One way I try to prevent my students from going anywhere online other than where I want them to go is by having the links all set up for them, ready to go. These links are all posted on my blog. They never have to go and search the web for anything. They are not allowed to do a “Google” search from their computers. I offered a KidsHealth, Internet Safety flyer when parents came to my Technology Night. That was just an extra that I wanted to share with parents to remind them about keeping their children safe at home.
In completing these artifacts, I learned the importance of knowing copyright laws and learned what needs to be done to legally use materials that belong to others. Fair Use guidelines protect teachers to a certain degree. We need to remember to be careful when using the work of others and always give the proper credit where it is due. I also learned additional strategies and helpful tips to keep children safe as they use the Internet.
These artifacts positively impact Timber Ridge Elementary. I shared my PowerPoint Project with our Technology Team that I am a part of. They were impressed and really wanted to go over it a second time with their grade level teammates. This ended up benefiting the whole staff. A great way to keep our staff safe and using digital works in a safe manner.
